Chasing Dreams (2026): The Upcoming Chinese Drama Starring Chen Zheyuan and Zhang Jingyi You Need to Know About

A princess who can see the future, a general who stands by her side, and a prince who refuses to let go — fate is about to get very complicated.

Tentative premiere: May 16, 2026 Episodes: 40 Genre: Historical · Romance · Fantasy

If you’ve been waiting for a historical romance that goes beyond the usual palace drama formula, Chasing Dreams (2026) might be exactly what you’re looking for. Starring Chen Zheyuan and Zhang Jingyi, this highly anticipated C-drama blends historical intrigue, slow-burn romance, mystery, and a touch of fantasy into one story — and it’s tentatively set to premiere on May 16, 2026 on Tencent WeTV and RYEVIDZ. Fans have been counting the days, and honestly, so have I.

A princess whose world falls apart overnight

The story centers on Princess Ti Lan of Xiangnan — cheerful, free-spirited, and living a comfortable royal life, until a sudden coup changes everything. In one night, everything she knows is stripped away. But rather than being broken by the chaos, Ti Lan emerges from it with something unexpected: the rare ability to foresee the future through song, earning her the name the “Blind Songstress.”

It’s a fascinating starting point for a heroine — not born into power, but forced to adapt to survive, and gifted with an ability that’s as much a burden as it is a blessing. She doesn’t just see the future; she has to decide what to do with that knowledge, especially when what she sees involves the people she loves.

Two men, one woman, and a war brewing in the background

Through a twist of fate, Ti Lan is betrothed to General Tang Qian Zhi — a calm, loyal, and quietly devoted man who becomes her anchor amid the storm. Their relationship doesn’t ignite instantly; it builds slowly, the way good love stories tend to, with the two gradually recognizing in each other something real and worth fighting for.

But standing in the way is Prince Zhong Xu of Great Zheng, who becomes dangerously fixated on Ti Lan because she reminds him of his late consort. His obsession isn’t just unsettling — it becomes a genuine threat as the political situation between kingdoms deteriorates and war begins to spread across the land.

At the heart of all this is Ti Lan’s quiet but fierce refusal to be a pawn. She refuses to be controlled by fate — even when she can see it clearly — and that tension between knowing the future and choosing to fight against it is what gives this story its real emotional depth.

About the source material

Chasing Dreams (2026) is adapted from the novel Xie Luo by Xiao Ru Se. The novel has built up a dedicated readership for its layered heroine and its blend of political drama with romantic tension — both things that tend to translate well on screen when handled carefully. The drama’s screenwriter is Ke Yitong and it is directed by Yang Huan, whose previous work has shown a strong eye for emotional storytelling in period settings.

Honest thoughts: is Chasing Dreams (2026) worth the hype?

EDITOR’S TAKE

“A heroine who can see the future but still chooses to fight for it — that’s the kind of character writing that separates a good historical drama from a great one.”

I’ll be upfront — I’m already quite excited for this one. The “Blind Songstress” concept is genuinely fresh. We’ve seen plenty of strong heroines in historical C-dramas, but a female lead who carries the weight of foresight while still choosing love and resistance over destiny? That’s a compelling internal conflict that can carry an entire story on its own, if done right.

The casting also feels well-matched. Zhang Jingyi has a natural warmth that suits a character like Ti Lan — someone who needs to be both vulnerable and quietly fierce without feeling inconsistent. And Chen Zheyuan as a stoic general is a role that surprised a lot of people when it was announced, but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. He has a calm screen presence that could make Tang Qian Zhi’s quiet devotion feel genuinely moving rather than dull.

My one concern is the 40-episode count. That’s a long run, and with a story this emotionally driven, pacing is everything. If the middle stretch loses focus or leans too heavily on the love triangle at the expense of the political storyline, it could start to drag. The balance between Ti Lan’s supernatural ability and the war plot will need to stay tight throughout.

But based on everything we know so far — the source material, the cast, and the concept — Chasing Dreams (2026) has the ingredients for something genuinely special. It’s sitting firmly on my watchlist, and I think it deserves a spot on yours too.
